Baptism is the first of the sacraments to be celebrated. Baptism is the gateway to the celebration of the other sacraments. Baptism marks the beginning of an individual's formal relationship with Jesus Christ. Individuals can be baptized at any age. A baptismal preparation class is required for parents who are presenting their first child for baptism which is held every First Wednesday of the Month from 6:30pm-8pm.
Older children will go through some formal instruction in preparation for their baptism. The amount of catechesis will depend upon the child's age and how much exposure they've had to the Catholic Church through Mass attendance and Faith Formation.
GODPARENTS: Godparents should be chosen by parents primarily to be good religious examples to their child and not just because they want to bestow a family or social honor. Godparents are asked to assist parents in teaching the child about their Catholic faith and are required to provide an example of the Christian life. As representatives of the Christian community, Godparents give witness to the Good News of Jesus Christ, in word and example.
While it is traditional to choose two Godparents (one male and one female), only one is required. At least one Godparent must be a practicing Catholic in good standing (this means that he/she must have been baptized, received their first communion and confirmation, must be actively engaged in their Catholic faith, including attending Mass regularly and following the churches laws regarding marriage). If needed parents may choose one person to serve as a Christian Witness. A Christian witness is a baptized Christian whom the parents believe will be a good example of Christian living for their child.
CELEBRATION OF BAPTISM Baptisms are ordinarily held on Sundays either during the 9 AM or 11AM Masses, but may be held at another time if necessary. Please call the Parish Office to schedule a Baptismal.
